Ann Arbor Clean Cities

Clean Cities - a U.S. Department of Energy program - advances the environmental, economic, and energy security of the U.S. by supporting local decisions to adopt practices that contribute to the reduction of petroleum consumption in the transportation sector.

Clean Cities carries out this objective through a network of almost 90 volunteer, community-based coalitions that develop public/private partnerships to promote alternative fuels, advanced technology vehicles, fuel blends, increase fuel economy, promote hybrid vehicles, and reduce idling.

Why Clean Cities was Started

The Clean Cities program was created to support the implementation of the Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992. EPAct includes both voluntary and mandatory measures to help reduce our nation's dependence on imported oil. EPAct requires fleets owned or operated by federal and state governments and alternative fuel providers to meet a portion of their light-duty vehicle acquisitions with alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs). EPAct further requires fuel providers to use alternative fuels in their AFVs.

AACC Coalition

Ann Arbor Clean Cities (AACC) provides a forum for members to share information, leverage their resources, develop joint projects, collaborate on public policy issues, and promote AFVs in our community.  In the past ten years of effort, we have put more than 7,000 alternative fuel vehicles on the roads in Washtenaw County.  In 2009, AACC displaced over 1.4 million gallons of petroleum, giving you 1.4 million reasons to become a stakeholder today!

For every $1 invested in AACC, 20 gallons of petroleum is displaced.
