About XSeed Energy

Did you know that over 97% of Ann Arbor’s energy comes from non-renewable sources? We can change this. It's time to take our energy future into our own hands and create local renewable sources of energy.

XSeed Energy will develop highly visible renewable energy projects in the Ann Arbor community, utilizing funding from community donations and grants. Proceeds from financial incentives and donations will be recycled back into an ‘Energy Bank’ to fund ongoing renewable energy installations. Our goal is to ‘seed’ community funded - and possibly community owned - power projects in Ann Arbor.

Moving our community towards renewable energy is an important goal for many of us in the Ann Arbor area. We want to give everyone in our community a chance to support this goal, including people who are not able to put a solar energy system on their own property or business. This project will allow all of us to support homegrown, reliable non-polluting energy installations in our community. The Ann Arbor area can and should be leading the drive to demonstrate that it is not only possible, but crucial, to replace fossil fuels with locally-generated sustainable energy sources.

CEC intends to use the visibility and community support of this project to catalyze widespread adoption of solar energy technology, growing jobs in Michigan’s renewable energy sector.

Current Installations

We are thrilled to announce our first installation of solar panels on downtown Ann Arbor's historic Michigan Theater.

The panels, which will be mounted on an innovative solar awning frame, take advantage of the ideal solar exposure of the south-facing wall of the main theater space. This wall is set back from Liberty Street and from the front of the retail/office building by about 58 feet, and has excellent solar access with minimal shading from surrounding buildings.

The Michigan Theater was selected for the initial XSeed Energy installation for many reasons, including the potential for public visibility of a solar awning from the sidewalk across the street.

Why would we want it to be highly visible? The goal of XSeed Energy is to educate our community about the value of solar energy. Our installations will be funded mostly by you, members of the community, who are interested in contributing to an investment in the future viability of Ann Arbor and the surrounding area.

Solar Site Application

The Solar Site Application is open for the next round. Property owners, along with the organizations that occupy those properties, are encouraged to submit an application. All acceptable applications will be considered for future installations. Applicants will be notified when the next due date has been set and will have the opportunity to update their application.
