Clean Energy Coalition Has Moved!

Clean Energy Coalition's tremendous growth over the past year warranted a move to a much larger office.  Located in Ypsilanti's beautiful, historic Depot Town, CEC's new space features 12-foot ceilings in a building over 150 years old.

Our faithful readers may wonder about our building's energy efficiency.  Fear not!  Our dedicated staff, with assistance from efficiency experts around the region, has been working toward making the new space as efficient as possible.  Visit our website for periodic updates.

CEC Saves Green: Arbor Spray Foam Insulation

Before moving into our new office, CEC staff member Chris Petit utilized thermal imaging* to provide visual detection of the building's air leakage paths and deficiencies in wall insulation.  The resulting infrared scans prompted Arbor Spray Foam to provide the labor and materials for our space.  Spray foam insulation acts as an air and sound barrier, reducing air infiltration in the building's envelope and dramatically increasing energy efficiency.

IR Before.jpgThe infrared picture at left, taken before Arbor Spray Foam's visit, shows there is no existing insulation in the building's external walls.  With approximately 1,197 sq ft of 2x4 wall cavity, the wood studs are the warmest part of the wall.

IR During.jpgAn Arbor Spray Foam technician, at left, works to seal the building's thermal envelope.  The wall cavities quickly fill with open-cell spray foam in order to create a thermally-efficient space.

IR-After.gifThe infrared picture at left, taken after Arbor Spray Foam's visit, shows a significant difference in wall temperature.  The foam insulation, added to the empty cavities of existing walls, will significantly decrease future energy bills.

Many thanks
to Arbor Spray Foam for their incredibly generous donation of materials and labor!

Energy Tips

Did you know?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, only about 20% of homes built before 1980 are well insulated.  Adding insulation to a home's attic, walls, basement, and crawl space may be one of the best ways to improve a home's energy efficiency.

The DOE recommends insulating your home if you fit one or more of the following scenarios:

* You have an older home and haven't added insulation.

* You are uncomfortably cold in the winter or hot in the summer—adding insulation creates a more uniform temperature and increases comfort.

* You build a new home, addition, or install new siding or roofing.

* You pay high energy bills.

* You are bothered by noise from outside—insulation muffles sound.

To learn more about the benefits of adding insulation and sealing air leaks, visit the DOE's website.
